Ice Blocking

Well, it's pretty hard to find sledding opportunities here in AZ. Yes, we can drive up to Payson or Flagstaff, but that's not really convenient. One substitute that works really well here is ice blocking. One big advantage of ice blocking over sledding is that you don't get nearly as cold. One disadvantage is that if you fall off your ice block, there's no soft pillow of snow to fall into!

There is a park near our house with a great smooth hill. When Tyler and Angie came down to visit, we took the kids over to hit the slope. When we got to the park, there were already about 30 people sliding down the hill. One kid was using a furniture dolly- and he really got some speed. Some kids were even sliding on cardboard, which surprisingly worked really well.

It was a lot of fun, and a lot of good exercise getting back up the hill for another run. Of course Tyler had the most fun thinking of creative ways to go down the hill. He liked to use multiple blocks of ice and multiple people in various configurations. Most of his ideas worked- at least the crashes didn't cause any injuries!

Merry Christmas from Max

This is why you should never get a dog. Argh! I only spent 45 minutes in line to customize the perfect assortment of delicious chocolates. And I did NOT do that for the dog :( By the way, I always heard that chocolate was poisonous for dogs. I think that myth is debunked.

Anyone want to adopt a dog for Christmas? I know one that's available.

I know, I know. I'm late. But I still wanted to post these fun pics. The 12yo is a Cardinals player, the 10yo is a mage, and the 7yo is a zombie doctor.

Here are our terrifying jack-o-lanterns. Aren't you terrified even just seeing them?

A fun Christmas sing to sing along with the Family!

To the tune of "Jingle Bells" (more or less) as sung by the 7yo.

Dashing through the snow,
on a pair of broken skis.
Over the hills we go,
hitting into trees!
The snow is turning red,
I think I must be dead.
9-1-1, 9-1-1,
help is on the way.
I woke up in the hospital
with stitches in my head.
Jingle Bells, Jingle Bells,
How much fun it is to ride
on a pair of broken skis, OH!

Christmas Fest

SNOW, well kinda. Our neighborhood has a winter festival and somehow it snows every year. Its strange that the snow falls all in one spot.
They had cotton candy, popcorn, and hot chocolate. And best of all... FREE! The boys were in heaven. We also attended the dance program for a bunch the little girls from our old primary class. They were very cute in their tutus! Fun times.

A Christmas Story

Once upon a time...

...there were 7 raindeers. They all had black noises. One raindeer acsidently fell into a river that has combenashonse of stuff. He was in there for a few hours. Some elves spoted him and they got him out of the river. They dried him off. He was all clean but his nose was blue! The elves freaked out like crazy! The elves ran away. Then Santa came along "hohoho" he said. What do we have here? A blue noised raindeer. What a cuwancidence he said. We've got to wash your nose. When they were washing his nose, the color wouldn't come off. So they had to put him up for sale. But no one bought him. They tried letting him free in the wilderness. But he kept coming back. So they put him in the zoo. There his noise turned back to normal. Every one got bored of him. They threw him into the wild and he got lost. The end!

Merry Christmas from 7yo!

Pizza, Otter Pop, and Movie Party

This is 4 months late, but we had a blast for the 7yo's birthday party. What do 7yos like? Pizza, otter pops, and movies.

We invited over a bunch of kids from his football team and from the ward. We bought a bunch of pizza, crazy bread and a whole box of otter pops. You should have seen their faces when we told them that they could have as many otter pops as they wanted! Sheer bliss. Then the otter pop massacre began. They really put them away! We rented Home Alone, and none of them had seen it before. Perfect Movie! They laughed and laughed.

Great Party (and really easy for the lazy parents).

Pandora

As you may know, I am a cubicle dweller. I am chained to my desk for many hours a day. Fortunately a co-worker let me know about Pandora. It is a really amazing internet radio service, totally free.

I know that there are other internet radio sites, but I really like this one. Most sites have you pick a genre of music and then start sending in random selections of that type of music.

Pandora does it differently. You start out by entering one of your favorite groups, or a song you like. The software then does its magic and starts playing 'similar' songs. They are using the Music Genome Project database that is an attempt to categorize each song by unique characteristics. This is how they describe it.

Together we set out to capture the essence of music at the most fundamental level. We ended up assembling literally hundreds of musical attributes or "genes" into a very large Music Genome. Taken together these genes capture the unique and magical musical identity of a song - everything from melody, harmony and rhythm, to instrumentation, orchestration, arrangement, lyrics, and of course the rich world of singing and vocal harmony. It's not about what a band looks like, or what genre they supposedly belong to, or about who buys their records - it's about what each individual song sounds like.

It may be that I just really like the tech behind this service, but it does deliver long strings of songs that I really like.

Once you have the basic station set up, you can then add additional groups and songs to the station definition. Also as songs play, you can tell Pandora that you like a song or dislike a song with their thumbs-up or down buttons. As you do these things, you further fine-tune the station down to exactly what you like.

You can also set up many stations. So if the mood hits you to listen to "music like KISS", go to town. Then you can open up that Carpenters/Beach Boys station to mellow out afterwards!

The only downside for me is that they only let you skip so many songs per hour. But, you can skip approx. 6 songs each hour, so that's 6 more than the radio. They have also started playing ads- maybe one 10 second ad per hour. Better than the radio? You decide.

You might think that a big negative is that you have to stay chained to your desk to listen. Well, actually, I have a Pandora client for my smartphone! It has access to all the stations that I created at my desk and I can plug it into my aux-in jack in my jeep and rock out.

You can, of course, also play it out of you home PC if your speakers aren't too tinny.

First Day of School: 2009 Edition

Unfortunately it's not the best picture, but the boys are off to a whole new year of learning adventure. I'm not sure what the 7yo's face is all about :) It looks like he just sucked on a lemon.

This year is 7th, 5th, and 2nd grade! The 7yo is so happy to go (Our first child that actually likes school).

The 10yo was very concerned about his teacher. Her name is Ms Stein, and he was sure that a teacher with such a strict name would be very strict, but apparently it is possible to have a strict name and still be nice. It helps that his best friend is in his class.

The 12yo is on his second year of middle school, so he has separate teachers and subjects each hour. He seems to like it better than the single teacher from grade school. However, his new band teacher has threatened that they will likely have to stand at the next concert. Also, the prospect of having to attend a study session at lunch 3 times a quarter to prepare for history tests ranks pretty high on the "ruin my life" scale. (somewhere between eating your own pinky toe and stabbing a knife into the fleshy part of your forearm, I believe)

It appears the the year is off to a splendid start. Oh, I forgot to mention that the 10yo got a flat tire on the ride home. Bummer.

Disneyland 2009 Trip #2

It was a few weeks ago, but we went on our second Disneyland trip over my birthday weekend. It was a lot of fun. I forgot to take very many pictures. But I did get this one. Pretty good picture, eh (insert sarcasm). We hit all of the favorites and didn't feel at all rushed. It's wonderful having season passes!

Almost as popular as Disneyland was the beach. We went to the Corona del Mar state beach near LA. It cost $10 but we could park right by the beach and they had showers, bathrooms, and lifeguards. The water wasn't TOO cold, and the waves were perfect for boogie-boarding. It was a blast. Some of the waves were actually a bit too big and I was smashed into the ground a few times. But I always got up with a smile on my face!

There were some tide pools near this beach where the boys could catch crabs, so that was fun. The 10yo accidentally let some of the larger crabs escape. While he was looking for them, something really large crawled across my legs as I was drowsing in the sun. Needless to say, I jumped out of my skin, but I found one of the missing crabs. On a side note: Jill didn't come with us this time, so no one got sunburned :)

One of the exciting parts of our beach trip was this giant ray corpse that washed up on the beach. It was neat at first to see it up close. That lasted about 5 minutes. Then it became a rotting stinky corpse on the beach. Blech. After 20 min or so, it washed back out to sea. I was glad to see it go, until I realized that I no longer knew where it was. I only knew that it was lurking somewhere in the surf. We went swimming way down the beach after that. It washed up on the beach and back out several times that day. When it was up on the beach the seagulls would go over to peck off a little snack. The funniest part was all the ladies that were scandalized that the birds would dare deface such a magnificent creature. They would say things like, "You leave him alone, you terrible birds!", and try to shoo the birds away. These people need a lesson about nature. One guy ran over to the lifeguards to see if they would haul it away. They wouldn't.

Bird, the end.

Sadly, I must report a tragic end to our bird hatchery. I went outside and the nest had fallen from the tree. One little birdling was dead and the other hadn't hatched yet. I guess the mother bird didn't do a good enough job making the nest. If you look closely at the nest in the previous post, you'll notice that it seems much too shallow. Sigh.

Bird

We have a new addition to our family, kind of. The 7yo noticed that we had a bird nest with mamma bird in residence. We're assuming that she's sitting on her eggs, as she will not leave the nest. The daddy bird hangs around too, pretending to be useful, as we daddies do. She picked our 'devil-tree'- the tree of 1000 thorns, so she should be safe from the neighborhood cats. It'll be fun to see the babies hatch!

Football Playoffs

This spring was the season of flag football around our place. Both the 11yo and the 7yo signed up to play. It was a lot of effort getting them to practices and games, but we really had a lot of fun watching them learn and compete! You might notice from the picture that the 11yo is getting to be almost as tall as him mom. He's really excited to pass her.

A couple of weekends ago was the playoffs. The playoffs were sudden death elimination, and some of those other coaches were pretty intense, especially with the 7 year old teams. Pretty lame. The 7yo lost his first game, partly due to some shenanigans by the other coach:( but he was just glad to get a real trophy! He wouldn't let me put a picture of it on here because he wants to show everyone in person. The 11yo won both of his games and his team ended up champions of his league! It was very exciting.

Look how mean these 7 year olds are! These kids started the season never having played at all and they had a great season. Flag football at this age is hilarious to watch.

Here's the championship team for the 11 year olds. They also didn't have a lot of experience when the season started, but they had an amazing coach who taught them a lot. Honestly, I learned a lot about football from watching their practices and games. The first game in the playoffs was against a team that had already beaten them twice. It was a hard fought game, but they pulled ahead toward the end of the game and won! The second game was also very exciting with a lot of long passes being caught, and it stayed close through most of the 2nd half. But the Bulldogs won again! Congratulations, guys!

Oral Surgery

Some of you may have noticed a mention on my facebook page about the 11yo's oral surgery this week. It's funny because when he was a little boy, he had the most amazing perfect teeth. I remember wondering how he got such good teeth from two people who had braces and REALLY needed them :)

Anyway, when the perfect baby teeth fell out, the adult teeth came in poorly. Or, in the case of the teeth relevant to this post, didn't come in at all. He's had braces for 9 months or so, which has really helped his teeth a lot. However, he has a small mouth and there isn't room for all the adult teeth en route. Also the upper adult canines decided that they didn't need to come down and were planning on just staying up in the gums forever. So his orthodontist recommended (that's the nice way to say "insisted") that we take him to the oral surgeon. The final decision was that he needed 6 teeth pulled. The 2 upper baby canines, two adult teeth (for which there was no room), and two other baby teeth that hadn't fallen out yet and were interfering with the braces.

The big mess was the adult canines. To get them to come down, they cut slits in the upper gums (on the outer side of the gums, not inside the mouth) so that they can get to the teeth. Then they attached a little knob to each tooth, and a chain to each knob. The orthodontist can now attach these chains to the braces and pull the teeth down into place. Apparently one of them will take up to 6 months get pulled down :(

He was very scared and very brave, even when they put in the IV. The doc let us keep the teeth. (click below if you want to see them. I purposely overexposed the teeth, 'cause they're really gross)

The patient is doing well, but his face is swollen up by his nose, which makes him look like a gefling. The swelling has gone down a bit, but you can still see the "gefling' in there!

His poor arm!

First some background: the kids were getting their bikes out to go to school when I was called out to the garage. The brakes on Tank's bike weren't working right.

It looked like the cable for the rear brake had slipped and the rear brake wouldn't tighten enough to, you know, actually stop his bike. The front brake was fine, so he could mostly stop. I was late for work, so I told him to just go slow and be careful. The school is about 2 minutes away by bike, so I thought it would be OK. (queue the orchestra for the ominous music)

I got a text from Allie that afternoon informing me that Tank had crashed on his bike on the way home from school and that his arm looked bad and might be broken!! I knew instantly what had happened. There is one hill on the way home from school that is pretty steep. Tank HAS to always be first going down that hill and he goes really fast. I was sure that he'd lost control on that hill without brakes and had crashed.

I quickly called Allie and she confirmed my suspicions. I asked her how bad his arm was. She said that it looked pretty bad, but that she thought we should wait until I got home to go to the hospital. He had ice on it and leaving work early is tough right now, so I agreed.

I felt horrible! It was totally my fault because I let him ride his bike without good brakes. I couldn't believe how stupid I was. What a mess. First of all, it hurts to have a broken arm. Plus he's become somewhat of a star on his football team and he'd have to miss the games. Plus getting him dressed and bathed is hard enough without a cast. Plus getting him to/from school is going to be so much harder. I couldn't believe what a pain this was going to be. I'm such an idiot.

I had the idea that Allie could take Tank to her brother's office and get an X-ray to at least see if it was really broken. She sounded stressed, but she agreed to call him. It was about 4:00, and it's hard to get in touch with a doctor at the end of a day in the clinic because docs are always behind.

I felt guilty and crummy for the rest of the day. I called on the way home and she hadn't been able to get her brother on the phone, but she'd left a message for him to call back. Bummer.

I finally pulled into the garage and came inside. The boys were watching TV on the couch and Tank was under a blanket. His poor arm! I went over to Allison to get the scoop. She said that his arm really hurt, and we should probably take him to the hospital :( So I went over to see him and evaluate the situation. I felt so bad!

I pulled the blanket back and he was smiling! That was unexpected. Then he started laughing and the other boys were laughing. I couldn't figure out was was going on. Then they all yelled April Fools! It took me a few seconds to get it. It was all a joke, I couldn't believe it! Wow, they really got me. I really had no idea that it was a joke and it took a few minutes to unload all of the guilt and worry. Then I was so relieved that it never happened. I was laughing harder than they were.

Then I got out my tools and fixed Tank's bike.

6th Grade Camp

Do you remember 6th grade? I remember it pretty well. Lots of middle-school drama between groups of friends, boys and girls, different cliques, etc. Well, although those days are behind me, I got to relive it for a few days last week at Science Camp!

The 6th grade at C-dog's school takes the kids each spring up to Prescott, AZ to a camp up in the mountains for a fun getaway. They have a bunch of parents volunteer so that each parent has 3-5 kids assigned to them in a group. I had 3 boys from our ward in my group.

We met at 7:30am on Wednesday morning to find out who would be in each group. Then we waited around (waiting around would become a common occurrence) until 8:30, when they started loading the buses. Yes, the big yellow school buses with the green padded seats and no shocks. I swear they weld the axles to the frame on those bad-boys. Add that to the fact that I could not physically sit forward in the seat due to my long body, and that we had a 3 hour ride and I'm pretty sure that I have a decent shot at disability in some states!

At least I had my new blackberry storm to play with on the way up. It's fun to have mobile internet. I was showing the kids videos from youtube. They really liked the video of that big dog robot. All of them asked right away: "does it have guns??" I hope the designers of this robot have seen the Terminator movie...

Back to the topic at hand: science camp was fun. They did have classes, but not many and they were short. We ended up playing a lot of basketball and ping pong. I wish they would have told us about all the downtime: I would have brought a football, uno, other games, etc. It's really hard to entertain 11-year-olds with nothing!

The favorite activity was the gym- they had a rock wall and a zip line.

C-dog was brave and jumped off the wall, and loved the zip line!

This is just to show the scale of the zip line start height. Non-trivial, I'd say.

Because there wasn't much to do, one of the major events at camp was waiting in line for meals. There were three problems: They made us wait outside the door until the EXACT minute that the meal should start; if you were at the end of the line, you had to wait a long time to receive any food; and there weren't enough seats for everyone in the dining area. Everyone figured this out after the first meal, and started arriving early to line up. It got to where you had to be in line 20-30 minutes early to be toward the front of the line. And the line was long, see!

I also had to try to keep track of one of my boys, who HAD to be with his friends the whole time. It wouldn't have been too bad, except that his parents were terrified that his eternal soul was at risk at Science camp, and had tasked me with saving him. Anyway, he's a good kid and there were no problems, besides occasionally wandering off.

One funny event was orienteering class. The teacher gave us a compass and a list of headings. We were supposed to follow the headings until we found the station for each heading. Then we were supposed to punch the paper with the punch tied to the station. Simple, right? Well, it only works if all the stations are in place- someone removed the 2nd station the night before we did the exercise. So we wandered around back and forth at 300 degrees until we decided that something was wrong.

See how clean they kept the room?!?!

The fire was fun, and the teachers tried really hard to only let a small group of kids down to the fire at a time. Yea, right- it was a madhouse, but no one was burned.

The dance was pretty fun. C-dog didn't really dance, but he had fun wandering around having people sign his book. I challenged him to get a girl to sign his book. This was mostly just a tease because I remember being terrified of girls at his age. He promptly ran off and got 3 girls to sign. Surprised, I asked him to get 3 more, so he ran off and got 10! He had most of the kids at the camp sign it. I was really proud of him. I can't believe how much he's changed in the last year. The dance was kind-of a PJ dance. That's why some of the kids are in PJs, and some have PJs over their jeans. This video was early on, before the dancing really started. Some of those kids were good dancers.

Ahh, 6th grade...

Mouth is now officially a Webelo

This is the secret rite of passage into the Webelos den. They have to eat a powdered sugar doughnut while being suspended upside down. It sounds pretty hard to me-how can you swallow? To get into the bear den the boys have to fight the bear (dad) in a tent. For the wolf den the boys have to drink a whole cup of real wolf blood without throwing up. The boys all think its hawaiian punch or tomato juice. But the adults know the truth!

Please help!

I'm really frustrated with Blogger and its unfriendly method of importing pictures. Perhaps it's just user-error, but I have a difficult time bringing in more than 1 or 2 pictures. They end up all jumbled on the page, and I have to go into the HTML and hit enter a bunch of times to get them to line up like I want. Also, the 'preview' does not work correctly- the layout of the blog I see in preview mode is different than the layout of the blog I see when I post it. It's frustrating- I have to post the blog, look at it, grumble under my breath, edit the post, then repeat (multiple times).

Does anyone have any helps or procedures that they use when importing multiple pictures into blogger?

Disneyland 2009 Trip #1

We bought year passes to Disneyland this year. We're about 6-7 hours away so We're going to try several fun weekends at the Happiest Place on Earth(tm).

We went this weekend with Jill (yea!) and had a blast. Allie's work paid for us to stay at the Disneyland hotel and to have a couple of meals with Disney characters (they love her at her work). If you look closely, you will see that Mouth is giving the "hang-loose" sign, not something else!

We had to have a "snack-break" every few hours to save the boys from a cruel death from starvation.

It was really hard to get the "C" without a bunch of strangers with C-dog for this picture. People love to loiter around the "CALIFORNIA" letters.

Rides are fun!

Here we are waiting for Jill's fav ride Big Thunder Candy Mountain Railroad, or something like that. We rode it a bunch of times. I think we hit the biggies 2-3 times each. The boy's favorite was California Screamin'. It was too intense for Allie. She went on it once, but her knees were shaking at the end. She was a good sport.

We saw a lot of characters on this trip. It was fun to joke around with them.

Goofy was a fun character, but our favorite was Stitch. He was mischievous and tried to steal the boy's bacon. Hands off the bacon, man!

OK, seriously, who is the cutest? You know my vote!

One perk of staying in the DL hotel was "magic mornings". We got to go in the park an hour early on Sat and Sun. There were very short lines for all the good rides. We did the Matterhorn twice!

At the dinner buffet, we'd just sat down and ordered our drinks, when we noticed that Mouth was gone. We looked around and found him over loading up on the delicious buffet. Do you see him over there? He does love to eat, but only at the buffet! One bite of everything- a dream come true. Plus, all those desserts, yum.

Disneyland was super-duper. The best part of the trip? Having Jill along. She is wonderful! Thanks for coming, Jill!
